Is Your Business Ready for Hurricane Season? An IT Continuity Checklist for Florida Businesses

Ninety-four percent of small business owners believe they’d recover from a disaster. Only 31% actually have a plan. That’s not a guess — it’s what the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation found this year when it surveyed more than 2,000 small business owners and decision-makers nationwide alongside Verizon. Confidence isn’t a plan, and a hurricane season IT checklist is what actually closes that gap. Down here in Central Florida, hurricane season doesn’t wait around for you to find out the difference the hard way.

Most business owners think of hurricane prep as a facilities problem: board up the windows, top off the generator, check on the sandbags. That part matters, and we’re not telling anyone to skip it. But the bigger question for whether a business is still standing on the other side of a storm usually isn’t about the wind. It’s whether the systems, the data, and the team can keep functioning when the power’s out, the office is physically inaccessible, or the internet’s down for days at a stretch. We’re in the technology space, but we serve people — and this is exactly where that shows up. A continuity plan isn’t really about servers. It’s about whether the people on a team can keep doing their jobs and keep taking care of the people they serve, no matter what the weather’s doing outside.

That same Chamber Foundation and Verizon survey found something worth sitting with: among small businesses that have already been hit by a disaster or major disruption, 70% described the impact as bad, and most needed three months or longer to get back to normal operations. Three months is a long time to run at half capacity — or not run at all. And the businesses in that survey aren’t unusual. They’re the same size, the same industries, and often the same neighborhoods as the businesses we support every day.

Across the Gulf Coast, we watch the same pattern play out every season. A business assumes its backups are fine because nobody’s checked them recently. A team assumes they can work from home if the office floods, but nobody’s actually tested whether the software allows it. An owner assumes the internet outage will be short, and then it isn’t. The gap between “we assumed it would work” and “we tested it and it works” is exactly where a lot of businesses lose the season — and sometimes lose the business entirely.

NOAA’s 2026 outlook forecasts 8 to 14 named storms for the Atlantic season, including 3 to 6 hurricanes and 1 to 3 major hurricanes. Any one of those could be the one that reaches Central Florida. And the storm itself isn’t even the full risk. Attackers know phishing works best when people are distracted, understaffed, or running on backup systems after a disruption — so cyberattacks tend to spike right when a business’s guard is down. A hurricane hits the physical office. A phishing email hits the inbox while everyone’s attention is on the storm. Continuity planning has to cover both, not just the wind.

It helps to separate two things that get lumped together. Business continuity is what keeps a business operating during the disruption — where the team works if the office is dark, how everyone communicates with each other and with the people they serve, what the manual workaround looks like if a system goes down. Disaster recovery is what gets the systems and data back afterward. Businesses need both, not one or the other. A backup that restores data next week doesn’t help if the team couldn’t take a client call this week. Neither piece does much good on its own, and treating them as interchangeable is usually how a plan ends up with gaps nobody notices until the week it matters most.

Backups are the piece most businesses get halfway right. There’s a backup — but it’s sitting on a server in the same building that just took on water. Or nobody’s ever actually tested a restore, so nobody knows whether it works until the day it’s needed most, which is the worst possible day to find out. An unverified backup isn’t a backup. It’s a hope. A good rule of thumb: if nobody can say with confidence when the last successful restore test happened, it’s time to schedule one — this season, not someday.

This isn’t just an IT department problem, either. Oscar has always said he wouldn’t do anything for someone else’s business that he wouldn’t do for his own — and if it were his own, he wouldn’t want the whole team standing around on day one of a disruption waiting to find out whether the plan actually works. A continuity plan that only lives in one person’s head, or in a folder nobody’s opened since it was written, isn’t a plan the team can actually use under pressure. It has to be something everyone knows, and something that’s been tested while the sun is out.

What This Means for Your Business

Off-site, tested backups: Local-only backups don’t survive a flooded office. A backup needs to live somewhere completely separate from the main network, and it needs to be restored — not just run — on a regular schedule, so there’s proof it actually works before anyone’s depending on it in an emergency.

Power and connectivity redundancy: Surge protection and a UPS unit buy time during a power blip and protect equipment from the spike when power comes back online. Beyond that, it’s worth having an actual plan for what happens if the internet or power stays out for days, not hours — including whether there’s a secondary connection option at all.

Remote access readiness: If the office is inaccessible, can the team pick up right where they left off from somewhere else — tomorrow, not next week? This is worth testing before hurricane season starts, not in the middle of it, when there’s no time to fix what doesn’t work.

A communication plan: If the usual channels are down, how does the team reach each other, and how does the business reach the people it serves? This is worth deciding now, while everyone can think clearly, instead of improvising it in the middle of a storm.

Post-storm cyber vigilance: The week after a storm is exactly when a team is distracted and its guard is down — which is exactly when attackers strike hardest. Trust your gut and verify before you click, especially that week.

Questions to Ask Your IT Team This Week

Ask your IT provider: when was the last time you actually restored from our backup — not just ran it, but restored from it? If they can’t answer quickly, that’s worth a conversation.

Ask: if our office is inaccessible for a week, can our whole team work from somewhere else starting tomorrow?

Ask: what happens to our phones and our client communication if the internet goes down?

Ask: do we have a plan for who calls, texts, or emails whom if our usual channels are knocked out?

Ask: what’s our plan for phishing attempts the week we’re distracted by a storm?

A hurricane can’t be stopped. But a business can make sure a hurricane doesn’t get to decide whether its doors reopen. At the end of the day, this is every business owner’s call to make — but if it’s been more than a year since anyone actually tested a backup restore, that’s worth checking before the season gets going, not after it’s already tested the business instead.
